A PIL was filed by Delhi based NGO,
Uday Foundation in 2010 attempting to ban junk foods in and around schools. The Delhi High Court’s initial verdict was given yesterday but there will be another hearing on August 6th. You can read the news here.
Although headed in the right direction, there is a long way to go. The ban of 500 metres has been slashed to 50 metres. The food industry is claiming that it is not food that makes children fat, but lack of exercise — this is definitely a contributing factor but the refined carbohydrates and sugar in junk foods today are contributing not only to obesity but early onset of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Empty calories from junk foods make children undernourished as they do not get enough of good calories. This also needs to be emphasized.
